Paint Your Own Pottery at The Spirit of Clay

As Father’s Day approached this year, I was searching for ideas for a special gift that our three-year-old daughter could make for her dad.  While searching the internet I found the website for the Spirit of Clay, a pottery studio located in Mayfield Village.  You choose your piece of pottery from their large selection of pieces, and then you paint and decorate it.  When you are finished they glaze and fire it in their kilns, and it’s ready for pick-up in 5-7 days.  I knew that this would be a great experience for our daughter to get to paint and create a gift for her dad, and he would have a priceless keepsake that would always bring him back to this time in her childhood.

Our experience at the Spirit of Clay was so nice.  The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and they did a great job of explaining everything to us.  We picked out a coffee mug that had I ♥ Dad on the front, chose our paint colors and brushes, and painted away.  They had a very large selection of paint colors, stamps, and stencils for decorating.  My daughter had a blast!  She painted, and swirled colors, and stamped dinosaurs on the mug, and at the very end they helped her put her handprint on it.   Creating this special gift for her dad was a very fun and memorable experience for her.  I’m so glad that I found them.  This is the perfect place, for adults or children, to create unique gifts for friends and family.

You pay for the specific piece that you pick out to paint, plus a studio fee.  The fee is $6 for children 15 and under, and $9 for adults.  That includes all of the paints, the glazing, and the cost of firing.  There is no time limit on your studio time, and we felt very comfortable taking our time while painting and enjoying the process.

The Spirit of Clay also offers a Pottery Wheel Class for adults and children, as well as a Clay Hand-Building Class. They also offer a variety of party packages. They are located in Mayfield Village at: 828 Som Center Road, on the corner of Wilson Mills and Som Center, next to Heinen’s.  For more information call Kelly or Kathy at 440-684-0001, or visit their website:

So, whether you are looking for an activity for the kids, wanting to paint as a hobby, or looking for pottery classes in our area, this is a great place for all three.
